Interview: Theophilus Martins' Good / Posture
A few months ago I had the honor & pleasure to shoot the editorial & lifestyle lookbook for Theophilus Martins' Good / Posture. The idea was simple, just shoot. A friend of Theo's allowed us to vacant her Silverlake home for a few hours as the setting for the shoot & the contrast of clothing, vibe, models (including Theophilus himself) - everything fell into place so naturally which was exactly the idea Theo had for shooting this.
Along with the pleasures of shooting the editorial, I also had the pleasure to catch up with Theo during his busy schedule like shows, Good / Posture popup shop, & also his newest EP he recently released titled "Finchley Road" for him to take some time out to give some undivided attention for a interview. We talked about what was next for Theo & Good / Posture the company along with a few things outside of music that touched towards things about him as a individual. Here's what he had to say...
WHO ARE YOU & WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Theo: Theophilus Martins, providence Rhode Island.
WHAT DOES A DAY IN THE LIFE FOR THEOPHILUS CONSIST OF?
Theo: Long walks, lots of Seinfeld and Tom & Jerry episodes, cereal and sushi. I don’t do too much.
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO START MAKING MUSIC? WHO INSPIRES / INSPIRED YOU MUSICALLY?
Theo: I’ve created since childhood, overtime these gifts have simply evolved and have become focused.
DO YOU EVER GET MIXED UP WITH THEOPHILUS LONDON? BEING THAT YOU TOO HAVE VERY SIMILAR NAMES, SOUND & EVEN LOOKS, IF SO HOW DO YOU TAKE IT?
Theo: no, not really. I think people have an understanding of my identity and what I speak for. the name Theophilus is a unique one so I understand the attention and confusion it comes with.
YOU’RE LATEST EP IS TITLED ‘FINCHLEY ROAD’. IS THAT AN ACTUAL PLACE? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU WHY DID YOU NAME YOUR EP AFTER IT?
Theo: Finchley Road is a road in London that I lived on in 2014. It’s where I recorded this latest and EP and conceptualized the latest collection through Good / Posture. It’s an important place to me in that it’s allowed me to birth my identity, through solitude.
IF MUSIC WASN’T A OUTLET FOR YOU, WHAT ELSE COULD YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING?
Theo: It’ll always be the outlet. I love science though, wanted to a police officer as a kid.
BEING THAT WE MET WHILE YOUR TIME WORKING AT GOLDEN STATE CAFE, HOW DO YOU VIEW THE KIDS & CONNECTIONS THAT COMES ALONG WITH BEING ON THE BLOCK ON A DAILY BASIS? DO YOU THINK IT HELPED YOUR CREATIVE SIDE GET TO WHERE IT IS TODAY?
Theo: 100%. Environment is everything. I came to LA with little to nothing and The Fax allowed me to be amongst a community of thinkers and doers.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING MUSIC, YOU ARE…
Theo: Long walks, lots of Seinfeld and Tom & Jerry episodes, cereal and sushi. Same thing, doesn't change.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR OWN, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BRANDS?
Theo: Carrots by Anwar Carrots, Born x Raised is really good, CHRLE, 1997-2002 GAP, 2003-2008 J. Crew.
WHAT IS THE GOAL FOR GOOD / POSTURE APPAREL WISE? WHAT’S NEXT?
Theo: The goal was to create and we did that. Good / Posture isn’t a clothing line, just platform for tangible and intangible ideas.
WHAT KEEPS YOU SO CALM & COLLECTIVE? OVERTIME WHEN I SEE YOU IT’S ALWAYS A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AS IF YOU JUST WON THE LOTTERY HAHA WHAT EXACTLY MAKES YOU SO WARM WELCOMING YOU THINK?
Theo: Thank you, it’s hard to be positive because it’s a vulnerable thing and something you cannot control. There are lots of dark things to focus on, but that does me no good.
NAME ONE PLACE YOU’VE NEVER BEEN BUT WOULD LIKE TO VISIT?
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOU?
Even though Theo decided to conclude without a shoutout I would like to send a shoutout & more importantly a thank you for allowing me to not only answer some interview questions but for letting me be apart of Good / Posture creative. I would always say to him how we needed to shoot repeatedly but honestly the patience was a virtue & everything worked out in due timing & also perfect timing. Please make sure you guys visit his website www.good---posture.com where you can purchase merch, find him on all social media & also listen to his latest EP 'Finchley Road'. Thanks again sir!
