Interview: Mita

Recently our friends over at Suspend Magazine did a fashion spring editorial interview with a very very supportive friend who we all know as "Mita". Mita is currently the only female that works for any of The Hundred's flagship stores but more importantly she's the only girl that works at the flagship in which a lot of us call a home in being the Rosewood & Fairfax location. Mita has been a legend to the block of RSWD & I purposely isolate RSWD due to her none interest in anything else but The Hundreds store itself. Though she's well know around the neighborhood she stays down to the real in which RSWD is considered that real. I met Mita a few years ago just off of hanging around RSWD & if you were to ever come by the shop especially before the remodeling you would see how easy it was to spark up conversation with people & make friends. Mita turned out to be one of those people for me.

Not only is she stylish, down to earth, real, funny & any other positive trait you can name about a human being she is very intelligent. I can't tell you how many times our conversations have turned from legit 30min long roast sessions to talking about real life shit that either is going on, gonna go on or things we individually have in stored for ourselves. She's just the prime example of what it is to be human. In a era where social media takes up & even ruins people's lives & though you will catch her with 2 IG profiles & even tweeting here & there, that doesn't define who she really is. She still plays with a yo-yo, she goes to the movies alone, she rides the bus with no shame, & MOST IMPORTANT, she still talks on the house phone. So if ever given the chance, here are some of the things she may talk about...

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Mita: I'm from Cessy and Tony. Haha naw I'm from shit hole Alhambra. Born and raised there sadly. It's a nice area I just never fit in there. My family moved between there and Boyle Heights a few times. That's where I stay right now.

IF YOU CAN REMEMBER, WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF BEING ON RSWD?

Mita: Damn I couldn't really say I've smoked so much since then. Haha it might have been when the Nerf x T.H collab came out. HOT ass summer day. The homie Roman and I waited for them to open in front of [Jason] Dill's crib and took bong rips. I took that mini bong everywhere back then. Once the store opened I copped the football, rolled up and asked if anyone wanted to smoke. I met Julian and 5ive that day. They liked my Grosso sk8 mids. Niggas had a little two-hand touch game going on in the street and everyone was out. I was like, "Yup, I like it here."

FAVORITE RSWD MEMORY?

Mita: Shit man that's tough. Haha I'd have to say when (once again) Roman and I were in front of Dill's fighting over a sticker or some sit. Dill comes out and says, "I saw you guys from my window I wanted to give you some stuff. (hands us Fucking Awesome tees and stickers) My name's Dill." NIGGA I WAS BEYOND STOKED! I admired this dude since I was a kid and here he was being all chill n shit. Shook dudes hand and he was like, " I don't have no fucken Twitter, no Instagram none of that shit. Fuck the internet. I don't even have a cellphone. You can buy my stuff at Supreme around the corner." Hahahaha this was like 2012 I think it's my favorite cuz I was super broke back then. Would spend my last dollar on a bus pass just to kick it out here. Couldn't even buy lunch type of shit. But hey, times are good when they're with honest intentions.

WHAT’S YOUR HONEST THOUGHTS ON RSWD & THE CURRENT FAIRFAX SCENE TODAY?

Mita: Fairfax is not tite no more. All the real deal people left. the one's that are around are hot cuz these money-fed cats came to their turf and fucked up the vibe. HUF, Reserve, Mr. Pizza is all gone. Shops were like homes and if you came in on some janky vibes, same vibe was given back. Not cuz they were too cool but real recognize real.

Now? IT'S ALL FUCKED UP. Shit looks like a shopping center some days. It lost its exclusivity. Have you seen those random ass shops?! How can anyone just pop up on someone else's porch, talkin about, "we're cool toooooo." Where is the culture in being a gentrifier? Where in the fuck is your originality? Fairfax is turning into the "cool kids," thing and I hate cool kids. It's just a street with stores chill out. As for the random cats up there looking at me sideways chill - I aint shit. Hahaha

RSWD is home! When I first started coming up here I got all the right vibes from locals. RSWD hasn't changed much minus the new store. We're really on our own shit. It sucks not seeing OG heads as much but life progresses. It's the only spot I see homies want to kick it at too. RSWD is a street and a person. The people make RSWD. The only "random," people up here are Allan and I but it aint a thang, we're young and growing.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT RSWD?

Mita: What I love about RSWD is the sense of freedom; talk about whatever, listen to whatever music, read, skate, smoke, drink - you just do you. I love the porch, bench, curb, power box. Love/hate the big ass wall cuz it blocks that rad Retna piece but I use it to play with my tennis ball. RSWD is a naturally built collective so there's more than one favorite.

IF ANYTHING, IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKING ON RSWD & JUST BEING THERE HANGING OUT LIKE WE ALL ONCE DID? IF SO WHAT IS IT EXACTLY?

Mita: Hell yeah there's a difference nigga I get a check now!!! Hahaha! Minus the check and 5ive being my boss man, it's pretty much the same. Still chopping game with the dudes, still roll blunts, still sitting on the curb. I just have to be more attentive to people which has actually helped me in other realms of life. RSWD is RSWD baby.

LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED & WOULD YOU SUGGEST IT TO ANYONE?

Mita: I watch multiple movies a day so I'll break it down like this...

This morning: Breakfast At Tiffany's with the most breathtaking Audrey Hepburn. Ladies look to her for the perfect balance of sass and class.

Short Film Premiere: Indie flicks are the shit. I saw two, American Piano and Shoot The Moon. Both awesome in their own right.

In Theaters: Ex Machina. I loved it. Dialogue was awesome. Interior design and setting was rad. Might have turned me in to a sci-fi fan.

FAVORITE MOVIE?

Mita: Daaammnn I cannot choose just one there's so many good fucken movies on this earth. My general answer would be Kicking and Screaming. Hahaha I die of laughter every time I watch that shit.

PLACES YOU WANNA VISIT & WHY?

Mita: It's not places I want to visit it's places I WILL visit. Shit I want to see all the MLB fields but the U.S is easy. Man I'm trying to go all over the world nigga. Off top Tokyo and Paris. I want to shop and eat in all the cutty spots of everywhere!!! The world is a playground I'm not going to limit myself.

BESIDES BRICKS & WOOD™, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BRANDS OR PIECES THAT YOU ENJOY BUT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT?

Mita: Damn as for brands I could give a shit. Fashion and style are two different things. I just buy clothes I like. The end. I could wear P.L with a Target white tee and BAPES one day and all T.H the next. Brands I do favor at the moment are The Divinities, P.L., URLA and H.P.$ Lifestyle.  As for pieces people may not know about - they'll never know. Stay aware, stay rare.

AS WE ALL HAVE OR WILL DO AT SOME POINT, WE WILL HAVE TO TAKE THAT NEXT STEP OF THE STOOP & LEAVE THE BLOCK IN ORDER TO WORK ON & FOR OURSELVES, IF YOU’VE THOUGHT THAT FAR AHEAD WHAT’S NEXT FOR MITA AFTER RSWD?

Mita: House Phone $hawty Lifestyle Brand. All in stride and by God's good grace. I just ask that people seek patience and watch me cook this homemade meal - I'm a stove top.

SHOUTOUTS?

Mita: Cessy - you're my world, thank you. RSWD, Chrissy Chri$, Leilani, Adam, Roman, Tia Nes, Cruzer, Metro bus & train, Suspend Mag, strangers who are nice, Boyle Heights and Kacey, you're my nigga 4 life!!! AND S/O THE STRUGGLE. YOU SHOWED ME WHO I TRULY AM.

Use my social media shit so I can ask you for my number. Fuck DMs n all that.
