As I continue to recap my most recent trip to Portland I recap on the new things I was able to experience as well. Due to creative director of Tanner Goods Sam Huff being a season ticket holder & a few tickets up for grabs, I was blessed with the opportunity to attend my first ever professional soccer game.
Soccer in Portland is a fairly newer form of sports entertainment in PDX due to the Portland Timbers being founded in 2009. It didn't take long for the Timbers to break off into a very good team that by 2013 they had already established themselves into a playoff team by clinching first in their Western Conference. By 2015 the Timbers advanced to the MLS Cup where they defeated Columbus Crew SC & won their first ever MLS Cup Trophy. The Timbers are nothing to play with & it only makes them a lot better when you have such a loyal fanbase here in Portland for any team that represents the city.
In this matchup I had the ear ringing pleasure to also sit in a section directly next to what they call the "Timber Army" which I'm sure you can guess. Very loud, very aggressive, hate any sort of penalty on their team, white people, green towels, the color green in general, & don't even let me get into what happens when the Timbers score. Pandemonium!
Not only was it my first ever soccer game but the home team also came out with a victory in a pretty close but fun matchup. This will definitely be the first of many soccer games I plan to attend as well as trying to follow up on MLS.
